Pool Drain Safety

Hi everybody! Hope you all had a great weekend. I had a lot of my friends ask me over the last several days about a story that we ran last week about pool safety, specifically pool drains.

A 6-year-old boy who lives not far from me got caught in a pool drain and drowned a week ago Saturday. The same thing happened to a high school classmate of mine who was a fairly big guy, and people get caught in these drains with enough frequency that the CPSC actually named pool drains as one of the top five home hazards. I don't have a pool, but my kids routinely get invited to people's houses to swim, so this is really information that everybody needs to know. There are some very simple things that you can do to make sure your kids and others are safe.

And I've had so many people ask me about this story that I decided to run my interview with Nancy Nord here on the blog. The most important thing you can do is have the right kind of drain cover, and you'll see Nancy demonstrate the right and wrong kinds of covers to have in your pool. Because anything from hair, legs and arms can get caught and have deadly consequences.
