Police: Office Gunman Targeted 2 Victims

An accounting firm employee fired from his job last week returned to the building where he previously worked and shot three people, killing one in what authorities believe may have been a targeted attack.

Anthony LaCalamita III, 38, was arrested several hours after the Monday morning shooting, following a 30-mile highway chase that reached speeds of up to 120 mph. He said nothing after officers surrounded him, Genesee County Sheriff Robert J. Pickwell said, adding that a 12-guage pump-action shotgun and three live shells were found in the vehicle.

LaCalamita was being held on charges of fleeing and eluding police and was expected to be charged Wednesday in the shooting, Troy Police Lt. Gerry Scherlinck said.

Witnesses described a chaotic and terrifying scene at the office building that houses Gordon Advisors and its subsidiary, G&C, in the upscale town of Troy, about 15 miles north of Detroit.

"We heard pop, pop, pop," smelled gunpowder and heard co-workers yelling, said Jean Larson, 48, a staff accountant for G&C where workers had been busy preparing tax returns.

"I heard one employee screaming, 'He's got a gun. He's got a gun.' It was a panic. No one knew what to do. No one knew where to go."

The gunman then left the office complex and headed north, where he was spotted hours later by a motorist 50 miles north of Detroit.

Police said two of the victims were apparently targeted; the person who was killed was a 63-year-old woman whom they would not identify.

Calls to the company were not answered Monday afternoon, and a message posted on its Web site said the office would be closed Tuesday in memory of Madeline Kafoury.

Troy Police Chief Charles Craft said LaCalamita was fired last week but still was listed on the Web site of Gordon Advisors, a 40- to 50-employee company.

Scherlinck identified the other victims as a 47-year-old man and a 48-year-old man who were in management positions. The gunman also may have been seeking another man who was not at the office at the time.

"It appears that he was especially targeting those two males," Scherlinck said.

Hospital officials would not release details about their conditions.
