Police: Fleeing, bleeding man jumps in ocean

(CBS/AP) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A man Daytona Beach Police say choked an officer before trying to flee by swimming in the ocean has surrendered.

Police say 29-year-old Samuel Scott is being treated in the hospital for a cut to his head. He is expected to be charged with attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal says police tell it Scott was "actively engaged" when officers responded to a report of domestic violence at his apartment Sunday. Officers told the newspaper they tried to use a Taser on Scott and sprayed him with mace, but he hit an officer in the eye and tried to choke him.

Police tell the newspaper Scott then dove through a bedroom window, ran to the beach and swam about 50 to 60 yards before returning to shore, bleeding from the cut, and gave himself up after a standoff lasting almost a half-hour.
