Pentatonix, Harrison Ford bring "Star Wars" to AMAs
"Star Wars" fans got their fix Sunday at the 2015 American Music Awards.
Host Jennifer Lopez introduced a new scene from the highly anticipated "Star Wars" film, "The Force Awakens," followed by a walk-on from none other than Harrison Ford.
Ford played Han Solo in the "Star Wars" films of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and he is reprising his role in the upcoming sequel, where co-star Carrie Fisher will join him as Leia (no longer a princess).
This time, however, Ford wasn't the star of the show. The actor took the stage at the AMAs to introduce a cappella group Pentatonix, who covered the "Star Wars" theme by John Williams; Ford gave the audience a refresher on the movie score composer, playing some of his hits, like the "Jaws," "E.T." and "Indiana Jones" theme songs. He promised, though, that Pentatonix's rendition of the "Star Wars" theme would be totally different -- and he was right.
The group began singing the iconic song completely a cappella, with no orchestral accompaniment or tracking. The members dressed up in "Star Wars" garb, complete with Jedi robes and Princess Leia buns. The singers of Pentatonix uttered not a word as their voices provided the percussion, melody and harmony of the song.
The performance only got more epic when John Williams' full symphony orchestra joined in, making the performance sound almost how the song traditionally sounds, but with the added vocal powerhouses of Pentatonix.
The force is strong with these ones.
