Oh's Parents Are Happy She's A TV Doc
They may have wanted their daughter to aspire to be a doctor or lawyer when she was growing up, but now Sandra Oh's parents are thrilled she's playing a doc on TV.
"They didn't see that there was any meaning to being an actor," Oh says in a new interview with Marie Claire magazine. "It was like, 'What are you doing for society? Are you being a good Christian?' They were classic immigrants — they wanted their children to become doctors or lawyers. My sister is a lawyer, and my brother is finishing his Ph.D. in medical genetics. The fact that now I play a doctor on TV? Nothing could be better!"
The Canadian actress says her role as super-intern Cristina Yang on "Grey's Anatomy" requires a lot of focus.
Previously starring in TV shows like "Arli$$" didn't really prepare her for the mega-stardom that the hit ABC show sent her way.
"You can't predict what will happen to you with this sort of fame," says Oh. "It affects everyone so intensely. Some people grow up. Some people become really spiritual. And some of them ... drink the Kool-Aid."
