NYC and LA home to nearly 1 in 5 immigrants living illegally in U.S.
SANTA ANA, Calif. - A report shows nearly one in five immigrants in the U.S. illegally live in the New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas.
The report released Thursday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center estimates more than 2 million immigrants in the country illegally lived in the two areas in 2014.
By far the biggest unauthorized immigrant populations were in the New York and Los Angeles metro areas (1.2 million and 1 million, respectively). None of the 20 other metro areas studied approached a million undocumented residents
Pew says the country has about 11.1 million immigrants who do not have legal status.
The report also estimates more than a third of the immigrant population in the Houston, Dallas, Denver and Phoenix metropolitan areas lacked legal papers.
Five of the 20 metros with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations are in California: Los Angeles, Riverside-San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Diego and San Jose. Three – Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin – are in Texas, the study found.
The top 20 metropolitan areas for unauthorized immigrants have been remarkably consistent over the past decade, according to the Center’s analysis. Nineteen of the 20 top metropolitan destinations for unauthorized immigrants in 2014 ranked among the top 20 each year over the previous decade, the study found.
The report comes as President Trump tries to boost ties with local law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal immigration.
