Motorcycle crashes into parked car to teach safety

(CBS) - The Myrtle Beach, S.C., police department takes motorcycle safety very seriously.

In a staged bike crash using dummies, students were shown the dynamics and effects of a two-vehicle accident involving a stationary car and a motorcycle carrying two passengers.

"Sixty-six percent of all motorcycle collisions are fail to yield right of way," said Lt. Dale Smith, S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.

Smith warned that car drivers need to be constantly on the lookout for motorcyclists.

He said that the controlled crash was only at a 45 mph impact, but the devastating effects are evident even when motorcyclists are not traveling at high speeds.
