"She had a good cry when she heard," he told People magazine on Tuesday. "I can't tell you I was jumping up and clicking my heels. For me, it will probably be two or three months before it will really sink in and feel good."
Zeta-Jones added, "We are so grateful for the wonderful care Michael has received and of course for this happy news. It's an incredible way to start the New Year."
The couple celebrated the news at a Manhattan restaurant on Jan. 6 with their two children, 10-year-old Dylan and 8-year-old Carys.
"We dined on oysters and toasted with Shirley Temples," Douglas said. He also had his first glass of wine since his diagnosis in August, but told the magazine, "It didn't taste good."
Douglas told "Today" show co-anchor Matt Lauer that he had lost 32 pounds while battling the disease, but was now working out and had put 12 pounds back on. He also said he'll continue to go in for monthly checkups.
"I'm eating like a pig," he told People, adding later that he is now "going to be eating much more of an organic diet."
The 66-year-old actor is set to begin shooting Steven Soderbergh's "Liberace" in May or June, with Douglas playing the title part. He's also nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."
