MIAMI BEACH — A female driver was shot and fatally wounded by a Miami Beach police officer Sunday evening after she allegedly ran over another officer.
CBS Miami reports it was about 6:15 p.m. when the driver of a black BMW struck two or three vehicles as she drove from Ocean Drive to Washington Avenue on 12th Street. She was confronted by police officers near Washington and 12th who surrounded her car.
"She started the car and ran away," said witness Miguel Garcia. "She was, like, going over the policeman in front of her, the officer."
Another cop unloaded on the BMW after the first officer was run down.
"At that point the other cop started shooting. I heard like shots, like four or five shots, like 'pow, pow, pow, pow!' And then the car lost control," Garcia added.
The officer struck was tossed to the sidewalk by the force of the impact. He was cared for on the scene and taken to Ryder Trauma Center conscious and talking.
Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel Oates said the officer, who was not named, was being visited by his family and other officers.
The BMW, its driver fatally wounded, then crashed into a white SUV in the middle of Washington and 12th.
Junior Santana, whose uncle owned the SUV, said there was "a couple" in the BMW. Police confirmed a man was in the car with the woman. Their relationship was not made clear by officials.
Police have not identified the woman fatally wounded. They said she was in her twenties. Miami-Dade police, an outside agency, will conduct the police shooting investigation.
