Massachusetts married couple killed in mansion murder

(CBS) ANDOVER, Mass. - A Massachusetts married couple was found dead inside their million-dollar home on Wednesday, police say. CBS Boston reports investigators believe the two people were victims of a double homicide.

Officials identified the victims as 69-year-old John Magee and 67-year-old Geraldine Magee, the owners of the home.

According to police, a relative called 911 at 9:18 a.m. Wednesday morning, saying there may have been a shooting at the house. The family member discovered the bodies of the couple inside the home. Officers arrived at the scene and found that two people had been shot dead in a room on the first floor.

Police tell the Boston Globe that the door was unlocked and there was no obvious sign of forced entry.

A Lexus belonging to the victims appeared to have been stolen. It was later discovered on fire in the North end of Boston on Tuesday evening. A spokesman for the Boston Fire department said it took firefighters a half hour to put out the fire.

Authorities confirmed the married couple died of gunshot wounds, but would not elaborate further. Officers would not disclose if there were signs of a struggle or robbery, and that investigators were still uncertain of the exact time frame of the crime.

Police do not have any suspects or idea of a motive, but are calling the incident "isolated." "The circumstances leave us to believe that there is no further threat to the community," said Andover Police Chief Brian Pattullo.

Pattullo said police had not received any reports of domestic strife at the home but he would not comment if anyone else lived there. The couple had two adult children, friends and neighbors say.

Magee was a well-known developer who ran a family construction business and had two businesses listed at their home. Neighbors say he built many of the houses on the street.

Those who knew the family recalled the couple as friendly and happy. Neighbor Hamid Qureshi described Magee as "the nicest guy you've ever known."

Though police continue to say the killer is posing no further threat to the public, residents of the neighborhood say they are shaken by the murders which are the first for Andover in nine years. The lack of concrete information about the crime makes it worse, residents say.

Carlos Martinez, 34, who lives in an adjacent neighborhood said, "It's always been a safe place, and it scares me that it could happen here.''

Joe Geary, who has lived in neighborhood for 25 years, said he has never heard of a murder in the town. "I'm shocked," he said, "I'm stunned."

He said this is a well-to-do neighborhood where residents do not expect murders to take place.

"The one percent lives here. It's not what you would anticipate to happen here,'' Geary said.

The large, multi-bedroom home is valued at more than $1 million.
