Malikah Shabazz, Malcolm X's daughter, arrested in North Carolina on outstanding NYC warrants

(CBS/AP) MARS HILL, N.C. - Malikah Shabazz, the daughter of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, was being held in a North Carolina jail and was set to appear in a Madison County court Tuesday morning, and she could be extradited to New York to face charges on several outstanding warrants, including grand larceny, forgery, and identity theft.

Shabazz, 45, was arrested Friday night after authorities responded to a call to a Mars Hill home, Chief Deputy Michael Garrison of the Madison County Sheriff's Office said.

Investigators went to Shabazz's home Friday evening following an anonymous call to the Department of Social Services requesting officials check on the welfare of her 13-year-old daughter, reports The Citizen-Times.

Garrison said as they were looking into Shabazz they discovered the warrants which date back to 2009.

Shabazz, the youngest of Malcolm X's six daughters, was never formally served with the warrants which her attorney Sean Devereux believes were taken out by a family friend and are interconnected with the long-running dispute between Shabazz and her sisters over their parents' estate.

Devereux said his client is not fighting extradition and is eager to return to New York to deal with the matter.
