Logan Stevenson update: Pa. couple get married in front of terminally ill 2-year-old son

JEANNETTE, Pa.It was a day of great joy and great sadness. For a Westmoreland County couple, it was their wedding day.

It was also a celebration of life for their 2-year-old son Logan.

Sean Stevenson and Christine Swidorsky were joined in holy matrimony. It was a beautiful ceremony that they have been putting off for the past two years, reports CBS affiliate KDKA in Pittsburgh.

"With Logan being sick all the time, we just held off," said Sean, Logan's dad. "We always knew that he was going to get better."

But doctors say 2-year-old Logan Stevenson isn't going to get better. He has just weeks to live.

So, an outpouring of goodwill led to a hastily-planned backyard wedding in Jeannette.

"This is our dream come true, all our family together, and we're all together celebrating. A celebration of my son's life and a celebration of our marriage," said Christine, Logan's mom.

Donations poured in for the family and the wedding was planned in just a week. They wanted to make sure Logan was around to be best man.

"Under the circumstances of what the doctors told us, we just decided to go ahead and do it while he was still with us," said Sean.

The joy of marriage, the pain of having a terminally ill child, the newlyweds are overwhelmed with emotion.

"It's just going to be one of them things that you'll never forget as long as you live," Sean said.

"I'm speechless, and I'm touched by everybody's prayers and love out there," Christine added.

Logan dozed off and on during the ceremony, nestled on his grandmother's shoulder, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Debbie Stevenson said he is on medication to make him comfortable, but it also makes him sleepy.

Christine's mother died six years ago and her father died just two months ago, the newspaper said.

Logan, who was born Oct. 22, 2010, was diagnosed shortly after his first birthday with acute myeloid leukemia. Logan was born with a rare genetic disorder called Fanconi anemia. It often leads to cancer. The toddler was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

He endured a stem cell transplant in July 2012. Last March, he underwent surgery to remove a kidney ravaged by a tumor.

During a trip to Disney World in June, Logan fell ill. He was hospitalized in Florida before he was flown back to Pittsburgh.

During a trip to the emergency room last month, a test revealed a mass in his remaining kidney, which led to his terminal prognosis. Logan is spending his remaining days at home, where he is showered with attention from family members.

Christine's daughter, Isabella Johns, 13, served as bridesmaid and the couple's 1-year-old daughter, Savannah, was her parents' flower girl.

"This is our dream come true," Christine said through tears, the Post-Gazette reported.

The family has set up a fund to help pay for Logan's medical bills.

If you'd like to help, you can donate at any First Commonwealth Bank Branch. The fund is named Carnival for Cancer in care of Logan Stevenson.
