Lawrence Reynolds Jr., Takes Matters into his Own Hands: Ohio Death Row Inmate On Suicide Watch After OD'ing
COLUMBUS, Ohio (CBS/AP) An Ohio death row inmate has been placed on suicide watch after overdosing on prescription pills two days before he was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection.
Lawrence Reynolds Jr. was scheduled to be executed on Tuesday for the 1994 murder of him neighbor in Akron, Ohio and was under a 72-hours watch, which is routine for inmates scheduled for execution. When guards checked on him Sunday evening they found him unconscious on the floor of his cell.
Prison system spokeswoman Julie Walburn said Tuesday that the 43-year-old admitted taking an overdose of a drug that had been prescribed for him. The drug and why it was prescribed weren't disclosed.
Prison investigators are looking into how Reynolds was able to stockpile the prescription pills without being detected and are also exploring whether he had any visitors prior to the overdose.
Reynolds' execution has been rescheduled for March 16.
