(CBS) Remember that old tag line, "Where's the beef?"

When Lady Gaga showed up last night to accept "Video of the Year" honors at the MTV VIdeo Music Awards, it was all over her dress.

Yes, Gaga was decked out in a dress made up of slices of beef.

What explains the gag-inducing gown?

In an appearance on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show," Gaga said she wasn't a piece of meat, nor did she wear the gown in an attempt to poke fun at vegetarians, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Yet People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a statement saying the singer had done just that.

Whatever her point, one thing is clear: wearing lots of meat is healthier than eating it.

A 2009 study that looked at the eating habits of half-a-million Americans over 10 years, found that eating the equivalent of a quarter-pound hamburger daily gave men in the study a 22 percent higher risk of dying of cancer and a 27 percent higher risk of dying of heart disease. That's compared to those who ate the least red meat, just 5 ounces per week.

The study appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
