Kirstie Alley: Anti-Scientology Is Bigotry

Kirstie Alley is sick and tired of people slamming her religion, Scientology.

"Why is it OK that Scientology gets slammed? A bigot is a bigot is a bigot," the former star of "Cheers" and "Fat Actress" tells Ladies' Home Journal in the magazine's January issue.

Alley became a Scientologist after attending the group's Narconon drug rehabilitation program in 1979. Now she credits Scientology - along with Jenny Craig - with helping her lose weight.

"It was like, how do I go from really fat to not only thin - 'cause anybody can make her body thin – but how do you stick to it?," she said. "And how do I rekindle my career and get interested in acting again? And how do I get interested in a man again? For me, Scientology is, 'Let me make some oars and get in the boat and paddle myself across.' That's how I got to the other side."

Alley is filming a movie for Lifetime in January, "And She Was," which she calls a "fun little comedy." She's also planning a network television show, but did not give any details.

The twice-married actress said that since 2000 she's been very "freaked out and very careful about making a bad choice," when it comes to men. Instead, she's spent the majority of the past several years focusing on raising her children, William True, 14, and Lillie Price, 12, whom she adopted with her second husband, actor Parker Stevenson.

Now she feels ready to start dating again, with restrictions.

"... when I find someone who I'm really, really interested in, I am not having sex with that person for at least six months," she said. "I take sex seriously, and if you think you might want to spend the rest of your life with someone, six months is a drop in the bucket."
