Kickstarter Pebble smartwatch to ship Jan 23

Pebble, the smartwatch that syncs with smartphones to deliver email, text messages and calendar alerts, among other things, is finally getting a ship date.

Pebble Technology CEO Eric Migicovsky announced during a press event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the Pebble will start shipping to customers on Jan. 23.

Pebble works by using Bluetooth technology to connect to iPhones and Android devices.

According to The Verge, the company sold a record-breaking 85,000 watches via its Kickstarter campaign. To date, the Pebble has gained over $10 million in pledges from almost 69,000 backers -- making it the most funded Kickstarter campaign yet.

Kickstarter works by letting anyone propose a project on the site, setting a monetary goal. If the goal is met, the project gets funded. Everything from independent films to garden projects has been funding from Kickstarter campaigns.

The Pebble smartwatch retails for $150. The company says it should take six to eight weeks to ship 85,000 pre-ordered units.
