Key West Cracks Down On XXX Biz

In a city well known for its debauchery, officials are cracking down on strip clubs, escort businesses and adult book and clothing stores.

City commissioners voted 6-0 to cap the number of adult businesses at seven and limit them to one area of the island city's tourist district. Currently, there are 14 businesses classified as adult.

Adult entertainment will be banned at businesses ruled in violation of city codes. As businesses close, a lottery will be held for the seven available licenses.

The vote was the latest move by city leaders in recent months to rein in adult businesses.

Vans bearing images of bikini-clad girls advertising a strip club were stopped from driving around town and clothing-optional restaurants staffed by bare-breasted bartenders have been cited.

The licenses of one business named Christy Sweet's Personal Dances were revoked after officials said the company violated a law prohibiting strip clubs within 200 feet of a school, church or bar.

Key West has long been known for a risque atmosphere. The annual Fantasy Fest, with its parades, costume contests and extravagant balls, mainly adult oriented.
