Katie Couric's Notebook: Times Square
But this weekend, a night on the town could have turned into tragedy...if it weren't for the observant eyes of street vendors and some quick action by the NYPD.
No one was harmed because human intelligence combined with human error on the part of the would-be bomber.
We can't control the latter, but we can be aware of our surroundings. No matter where you live, if you see something...say something. The keenest technology in the world can't replace our own ability to spot trouble.
We should be vigilant and watchful...but not afraid.
Theaters were open on Sunday and so were the restaurants and shops.
When New Yorkers...new and old...stand at the crossroads...we stand united in our efforts to tell the world the show must go on..and terrorists can't steal the spotlight.
That's a page from my notebook.
I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.
