Kate Hudson on why she and Matt Bellamy broke engagement

Kate Hudson says she and Matt Bellamy split up and ended their engagement because they didn't have "a great relationship."

The actress gave Allure a tell-all interview and discussed her relationship with the Muse singer and father of her son, Bingham Bellamy. She told the magazine that she and Bellamy had different takes on their future.

"Relationships ending are painful, and you can choose to carry that or you can choose to reframe it," she said. "If Matt and I had a great relationship, we would still be together, but we chose to move on because we had different visions of how we wanted to live our lives."

The couple broke up in December, but Hudson said the two have remained friends. She said she and Bellamy are committed to maintaining a functional relationship for their child.

"That doesn't mean, though, that we can't rebuild something that would be the best thing for the kids," she said. "We said, 'We need to try to create something for the kids where they feel like they're gaining something rather than losing something.'"

Hudson says the change has been smooth.

"It's been a seamless transition," said the actress. "Kids just want to see their parents be cool. Everybody's cool; everybody's good."

And Hudson isn't ruling out finding a stepdad for her kids one day, like she had in Kurt Russell.

"I really benefited from having that very consistent [presence] in my life," she said. "It's something I am mindful of and want in my life."
