John Buttura (PICTURE): Vt. Teacher Sentenced for Sex with Student Under New Law
BARRE, Vt. (CBS/AP) John Buttura, a former Vermont teacher, has been sentenced to 4 to 6 months of house arrest for having sex with a 16-year-old student.

Buttura pleaded guilty in March to sexual exploitation of a minor and four counts of violating the conditions of his release.
The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus says District Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford cited several factors in not sending the 55-year-old Buttura to prison, including the timing of the offense.
When Buttura's relationship with the student began in Feb. 2009, his actions were legal because the age of consent in Vermont is 16.
But a new law that went into effect the next month prohibits people in positions of power from having sexual contact with a minor.
