Jets' Atwater Injured

Injuries hit the New York Jets again Thursday, with safety Steve Atwater sidelined by a hamstring problem.

Atwater, the free safety signed as a free agent in the offseason from the Denver Broncos, was listed as questionable for Sunday's game with Indianapolis. The 31-year-old veteran, in his 11th NFL season, will be replaced in the starting lineup by Omar Stoutmire, who was signed earlier this month.

Atwater has not played particularly well with the Jets, although he had his best two games the last two weeks. He is the sixth regular and second member of the secondary to be hurt this season.

Already gone for the year is cornerback Otis Smith (collarbone). Also out for the season are quarterback Vinny Testaverde and kick returner-running back Leon Johnson (knee).

Star receiver Wayne Chrebet missed the first five games with a broken left foot, but is expected to return Sunday. Nose tackle Jason Ferguson missed three games with an ankle problem and returned against Jacksonville on Monday night.

Linebacker Chad Cascadden, a backup who also is a special teams standout, is on injured reserve after tearing up his knee two weeks ago.
