Jaha's Grand Slam Lifts Brewers
John Jaha's grand slam made the night complete for Jeff Juden and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Jaha's homer snapped a fifth-inning tie and Juden pitched Milwaukee's first complete game of the season as the Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 Tuesday for their fifth consecutive victory.
Juden (3-1) allowed two runs on nine hits, struck out six and walked one. The runs came on a bases-loaded wild pitch and a solo homer by Mike Piazza in the eighth.
"I wanted the game. I was ready to go out there," Juden said. "I know it was a save situation for Jonesie (Doug Jones) and he's been throwing the ball real well. I just feel fortunate that Phil (manager Phil Garner) left me out there and gave me the shot at a complete game."
Dodgers starter Ramon Martinez (2-2) allowed five runs on four hits in six innings.
"Martinez was throwing the ball well," Dodgers manager Bill Russell said. "He threw a lot of pitches in the first inning, but it was a six-inning outing. He threw one bad pitch."
Jaha's second homer of the season put Milwaukee in front 5-1 in the fifth inning. With one out, Jesse Levis was hit by a pitch, Juden singled and Fernando Vina walked to load the bases. After Jeff Cirillo struck out, Jaha went the opposite way, slicing the first pitch over the wall in the right-field corner.
"The only thing I was thinking was fly ball to right field or right-center," Jaha said. "He was throwing hard and his ball was moving a lot, a guy you really can't go up there and try to pull. I figured I would just try to drive the ball to right field and got a ball I could handle pretty good."
Vina staked Milwaukee to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the first inning.
The Dodgers scored a run in the fifth to tie it at 1. Jose Vizcaino singled and was sacrificed to second by Martinez. Vizcaino moved to third on Eric Young's groundout and then scored on Juden's wild pitch.
"Everybody's unproductive," said Russell, whose club has scored just four runs while losing three straight games. "We couldn't get two, three or four hits in a row. We got down and we just couldn't get back. We had hits, but we couldn't get any runs."
