Jacobs Tops Morgan In Playoff

John Jacobs danced on the greens, puffed on a cigar during a playoff delay, and moonlighted as a television commentator after wrapping up his 18 holes.

Then, he really had fun Sunday, beating Gil Morgan on the first hole of a playoff in the Bruno's Memorial Classic.

Jacobs two-putted for par on the extra hole for his third Senior PGA Tour victory after Morgan hit his approach shot into the water and finished with a bogey. There was about a 12-minute delay as officials used television replay to determine where Morgan should drop his ball.

"I don't know why they delayed so long," said Jacobs, who sipped water and lit up a stogie while he waited. "It didn't matter to me (where they put the ball). It was kind of silly, really."

That was about all Jacobs had to complain about. He had one of the best rounds of his career, firing an 8-under 64. His best career round was a 63 in the senior tour's 1999 Kaanapali Classic.

Jacobs punctuated his round with a 20-foot eagle putt on the final hole of regulation to take his first lead of the tournament.

He celebrated by pumping his fist, high-fiving playing partner Dale Douglass and making stabbing motions with his club.

Then he chatted on the TV as Morgan finished with a birdie and three pars to send the $1.3 million tournament into sudden death on the Greystone Golf Club course.

"This was a special day, especially when you didn't think you had a chance," said Jacobs, who earned his second biggest payday at $195,000.

Morgan followed up a pair of 67s with a 69.

He laid up on his second shot of regulation instead of going for the green when a birdie on the par-5 hole would have won it. The move surprised Jacobs.

"If you'd won 17 tournaments on the senior tour, how would you play it?" he said. "I was shocked."

Morgan wasn't second-guessing though.

"If you go for it and you mess up, you don't have a chance," he said. "I think that decision was all right. I just didn't execute."

Jacobs entered the day six shots down with rounds of 68 and 71.

Second-round leader Dana Quigley rebounded from a disastrous front nine to finish two shots back. He had a double bogey on the 3rd hole and bogeyed the 4th on his way to an even-par 72.

Allen Doyle and Tom Jenkins were three shots back at 206.

Jacobs had four birdies and the eagle othe back nine to wipe out a four-shot deficit to Morgan.

Jacobs made the most of his superb day, celebrating birdie putt after birdie putt with little dances on the greens.

Defending champion Larry Nelson, who won last weekend in Las Vegas, briefly took the lead through four holes. He bogeyed the next hole and the first four on the back nine and finished at 76.

Divots: Walt Zembriski, 68, shot his age Sunday

  • Bob Lendzion used a 7-iron to ace the 165-yard 14th hole. Lendzion, who spent 26 years as a club pro, shot a 68 Sunday.
  • Fan Richard Elliott, 74, had a heart attack at the 18th hole on the final day of last year's Bruno's. It didn't stop him from returning to his post Sunday.
