iPhone tracking shocked pair who made discovery

Apple vigorously promotes the many things its iPhones and iPads will do. But the company has been silent about one feature on its newer devices: They are secretly keeping a record of every move their users make.

CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports the hidden tracking file was discovered by researchers Alisdair Allan and Pete Warden.

"The amount of data," said Allan. "The sheer volume of data was very shocking."

Anyone getting their hands on someone's iPhone could see everywhere the owner has been.

"And this is me starting off in Denver," said Warden, showing a train trip that was tracked.

A train trip between New York and Washington -- was plotted in detail.

"You can see -- that's where the Amtrak line is," said Allan, pointing to the laptop.

"We saw a picture of our lives, which was actually kind of fascinating," said Warden.

"We weren't asked our permission -- that's the difference," answered Allan, in response to whether he liked the fact that this kind of information is gathered.

One might not mind if his iPhone shows that today he wandered down San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf....or made a trip to admire the Golden Gate Bridge. But if what is stored on it reveals that he was in the vicinity of the Lusty Lady strip club, instead of at the office? That could be a problem.

Others may not want anyone to know they visited a doctor, went for a job interview -- or spent last weekend in Las Vegas.

"Security experts, when they look at data like this, they look at it as, how many divorces is this going to cause," said Brady Forrest, location technology expert.

What Apple may  -- or may not -- be doing with the information is a mystery.

So far the company has not answered CBS News' messages seeking comment, Though as Blackstone reports, if they checked his iPhone, they'd know where to find him.
