Paul Ryan says GOP still aiming to pass tax overhaul by Christmas

Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday that Republicans in the House and Senate are still aiming to pass a major tax overhaul before Christmas.

The Wisconsin Republican said at a weekly leadership press conference that he's thrilled "that we are so close to the finish line."

"This is a once in a generation opportunity," he said, adding that people will get to keep more money for their "hard-earned dollars."

House and Senate Republicans are spending this weekly reconciling the differences between their two tax plans and hope to hold votes on a final agreement next week. They will hold a public hearing on their developing proposal on Wednesday.

Ryan said that after House Republicans pass a tax bill, they will send an appropriations bill to the Senate, which he again said will not be attached to any sort of legislative fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
