Hillary Clinton opens campaign office in Utah
Hillary Clinton is opening a campaign office in Utah Tuesday as she tries to win over the state’s voters, especially its Mormon community.
Senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan will open the general election office in Salt Lake City and the campaign said he’ll explain why Donald Trump would be “terrible” for Utah’s small businesses and overall economy. The campaign said that an analysis conducted by Hillary for Utah found that the state could add 95,000 jobs under Clinton and would lose 31,000 jobs under Trump.
“Donald Trump has proven that he is temperamentally unfit to be president while his offensive rhetoric and troubling policies put the people of Utah at risk,” the campaign said.
Clinton wants to tap into the growing antipathy for Trump in Utah, which could make the state up for grabs in the general election. The state has not supported a Democrat for president since President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, but the Clinton could put the state into play now more than 50 years later.
Earlier this month, Clinton penned an op-ed in the state’s major newspaper, the Deseret News, arguing that she has worked to defend religious freedom throughout her life and would continue to do so as president.
