"Hangover Part II" takes in $31.7 million on opening day

(CBS) - "The Hangover Part II" brought in  $31.7 million Thursday, setting itself up to gross more than $100 million this weekend at the domestic box office.

The strong opening, which included $10.4 million from the midnight showings, makes it the highest ever for a live-action comedy, according to the Box Office Mojo.

It is also ranks third among the best Thursday grosses, falling behind 2005's " Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith" ($50 million) and 2003's "The Matrix Reloaded" ($37.5 million).

Despite unenthusiastic reviews, the sequel, starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zack Galifianakis, is on track to gross about $110-$125 million for the Thursday-Monday period.

In 2009, the first installment of the film became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. It made more than $467 million worldwide.
