Grand Theft Auto V release date nears

Rockstar Games

(CBS) - If you're wondering when Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV) is coming out, the answer to that question is complicated. Developer Rockstar Games is keeping a tight lip over the exact release date.

What we do know is that rumors are making their rounds.

In June, GameSpot reported that a source close to Rockstar confirmed the next installment of the driving-game is "well under way" and a 2012 release date was "pretty likely." The insider noted the game was getting its "final touches" and said the "game's scale was vast."

Most recently, bloggers have been spreading a rumor that U.K. video game chain Gamestation was accepting pre-orders for GTAV. This claim is a hoax.

The fact that there hasn't even been an official trailer for the video game tells us that a 2012 release sounds more realistic. Not to mention, it's highly unlikely that the U.K. will be able to offer pre-orders ahead of the U.S.

Besides, have we learned nothing from Duke Nukem Forever? Just because there's a pre-order list, doesn't guarantee a release date within the decade.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise was first introduced for the PC and PlayStation console in 1997. It went on to become one of the most controversial and iconic video game series of all time. The game is currently developed and produced by Rockstar Games, and distributed by Take-Two Interactive.

GTAV is expected to be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.
