NEW YORK (CBS) A "men's movement" is under way and Gloria Steinem took to "The Colbert Report" Tuesday night to talk about it.

The noted feminist and author appeared on the Comedy Central show to offer her thoughts on the current state of the battle between the sexes and the benefits of men raising children. Guys, listen up.

Steinem, 76, was quick to note that things are still not equal between the sexes. "Women still get 25 percent less earnings than men," she said to Colbert.

But even with the disparity in wage earnings, there seem to be some visible strides at least in the realm of women and work, right? Just look at today's political landscape.

Colbert noted rather cheekily that "the real story this year is that the Republicans are putting all the strong ladies out there, you got Sarah Palin tearin' up the pea patch all over the place. I think there are more Republican women holding office than Democratic women right now."

"Umm, no, I don't think so," said Steinem flatly.

"I don't think so either, but it sure feels that way if you look at the press right now," Colbert replied. Steinem laughed.

Even today, Steinem pointed out, women are still expected to have careers and raise children.

"Does that mean the real enemy is children?" Colbert jokingly asked.

Steinem pointed out that "men are missing a lot by not being close to their own children." She says, "There is a men's movement in order to be able to be equal parents. We're the only modern country in the world without parental leave."

In regards to men who rear children, Steinem says that not only do these men "have better marriages," they are "healthier, live longer and have better sex."

Colbert responded: "I think my fallback position is 'nanny.'"
