FLOWER MOUND, Texas (CBS/KTVT) Twenty-year-old Garrett Gower killed his 16-year-old girlfriend, Brittany Munoz, because he didn't want his parents to find out she was pregnant, a Texas prosecutor said Tuesday.
On Nov. 10, 2009, police found Brittany's body in the apartment she shared with her mother and sister. Officials say she was six weeks pregnant when she was killed.
According to the Dallas Morning News, prosecutor Ryan Calvert described Gower, now 21, as an "angry boyfriend whose world was collapsing around him" in his opening statements.
Calvert said Gower was afraid his mother would kick him out of the house if she found out about Brittany's pregnancy.
"He wanted her dead," the paper reports Calvert told the Denton County jury.
The arrest warrant affidavit for Gower, obtained by CBS affiliate KTVT, says Munoz suffered blunt-force trauma to her head.
According to the document, she was found on her bed and shards of glass were found under her body and around the bed. It also says her left eye was black and blue.
The affidavit goes on to say that according to Munoz' family, Gower is the father of her unborn child. It also says Gower and Munoz had a volatile relationship.
Gower checked himself into a psychiatric facility in Bedford before he was arrested on Nov. 13, 2009, according to the affidavit.
Gower was indicted on a capital murder charge. If convicted, he would receive a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
