• John Gregory Cashin was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended St. Paul's Prep School, and attended Colgate University. He spent a year studying as an exchange student in Mexico and Peru before earning his MBA from Colgate in 1949.
• He started his career as a door-to-door salesman, and eventually went on to become a successful businessman in the publishing, hospitality, and restaurant industries. Cashin also served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant.
• Cashin has held executive positions with Business Week, Food Engineering Magazine, and DARE Magazine, among others. He founded a restaurant chain called 'Cashin's' and operated seven establishments for nearly 14 years. Most recently, Cashin has started a farm that offers instruction in his favorite sport, polo, and breeds and trains polo ponies as well as more exotic species including ostriches.
• Although he had once been a Republican and voted for the two major parties in the past, Cashin has been a firm Libertarian for the past 15 years. He has served as a committeeman for the Cleveland Heights, Ohio Republican Precinct, and a member of the Young Republicans in Cleveland, Ohio.
• In 1996, he ran for the U.S. Senate on the Libertarian ticket, and won nearly 4% (82,000) of the vote. This was more than any other third party candidate (with the exception of presidential canddates) who ran in all fifty states.
