Food Roundup: Melamine Found in U.S. Infant Formula, UK May Eliminate Happy Hour, 7-11 Rolls Out Private Label Items, and More.

U.S. infant formula contains melamine -- Traces of melamine have turned up in three brands of infant formula in the U.S., but the FDA insists there is no reason to be concerned. The chemical, used to trick tests into showing higher protein levels for food products, has already made thousands of babies sick in China and killed at least three. [Source: AP]

No More Happy Hour in UK? -- As part of new regulations to tackle alcohol abuse, the UK may ban promotions like happy hour. Other rules to be issued next week include a requirement to put health labels, like those used with cigarettes, on alcohol packaging and in advertisements. [Source: Times Online]

7-Eleven launches private label -- As the drooping economy continues to boost store brands, 7-Eleven this week launched 32 new products under its own 7-Select. The company plans to roll out more products early in 2009. [Source: Food Business News]

McDonald's hikes cheeseburger prices -- McDonald's has officially announced its plan to raise prices on its Double Cheeseburger to $1.19. The company will also introduce the $1 McDouble, which has two beef patties but only one piece of cheese. [Source: Reuters]

Qatar lifts ban on U.S. beef -- The Middle Eastern country did away with a five-year-old ban on importing beef from the United States. Before the ban was implemented in response to the mad cow disease scare, Qatar imported $1.2 million of U.S. beef annually. [Source: AME Info]
