Florence + the Machine's new album "Ceremonals" to be released in U.S. Nov. 1
(CBS) Florence + the Machine's sophomore album entitled "Ceremonials" was released today, Oct. 31, in the U.K., but Americans will have to wait one more day for Florence Welch's bombastic sound.
The band's album will be released in the U.S. Nov. 1, but fans were able to stream the album in its entirety a midnight Saturday on Myspace.
After producing the acclaimed 2009 debut album "Lungs" and hit single "Dog Days Are Over," Florence + the Machine experienced the pressure many artist face coming off a first hit album.
"I wanted to make an album that sounded like the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, the violence mixed with the classical Shakespearean drama mixed with the pop and the pulp, extreme neon stuff," the British singer told USA Today about "Ceremonials."
While her description sounds confusing, the lyrics from the single "Shake It Out" are indicative of all that she mentioned: "And every demon wants his pound of flesh/But I like to keep some things to myself/I like to keep my issues strong/It's always darkest before the dawn."
Apart from her lyrics and style, it has always been Welch's soulful and booming voice that has drawn listeners in.
"There are many women out there now mixing R&B and soul, but few are rocking as hard as Florence," Gary Trust, associate director of charts/radio for Billboard, told USA Today.
Welch has been often compared to fellow British singer Adele, but according to the paper, "If Adele is this year's sweetheart of song, Welch is her eccentric soul sister. Explosive, tempestuous, spooky and unbound."
