Fans Riot To See Rap Show

Authorities still are trying to figure out how many people were hurt or arrested Thursday night in a bottle-throwing fracas at a rap concert in New Jersey.

One thing they do know is that there were more tickets than seats. It happened at the Meadowlands arena and it took riot police about 40 minutes to get things under control.

Police donned riot gear to quell the disturbance that began when hip-hop fans jammed entrance gates and knocked down fences with hopes of seeing the sold-out concert.

Police barred anyone from entering Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands sports complex after the disturbance began around 10 p.m. ET Thursday.

Authorities said those kept out didn't have tickets, or had fake passes. Some concertgoers said even ticket holders were barred from entering the arena after the disturbance.

The "Summer Jam" concert - which included Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Q-Tip and Nas Escobar - went on uninterrupted for the sold-out crowd of 16,000.

"Apparently, there were some bogus tickets that were sold, and a lot of people arrived at the concert without tickets. So they started pushing and trying to get in the building," State Police Sgt. Roger Johnson said Friday.

"I'd imagine quite a few people were injured. There were people fighting and throwing bottles," Johnson said, but he did not have details on any arrests or injuries.

State Police said the situation was brought under control within about 40 minutes.
