Earthquake Hits Mexico City

An earthquake caused tall buildings to sway in downtown Mexico City on Tuesday, less than two hours after a moderate quake shook the southern Mexican coast.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury in either incident. And it was not clear where the second quake was located or how strong it was.

Mexico's National Seismological Service said the moderate quake struck at 1:50 p.m. and was centered near the Chacahua Lagoon national park, about 240 miles south of Mexico City. Magnitude was calculated as 5.1.

Local news media reported that the moderate quake was felt in the region, which is close to the tourist town of Puerto Escondido, but that it caused no damage.

On Jan. 1, a strong earthquake rocked Mexico City and Acapulco, shaking buildings and sending some people fleeing into the streets. There were no fatalities or serious injuries from that quake
