Dog needs 1,000 stitches after California knife attack

LOS ANGELES - An animal rescue group says a dog that required more than 1,000 stitches after being stabbed and beaten is recovering in Los Angeles.

Police say the pit bull mix named Spartacus was attacked by a person with a knife and shovel in South Los Angeles early Saturday.

The Ghetto Rescue Foundation says veterinarians closed severe wounds to the animal's head, neck, ears, mouth and torso.

The foundation said Monday that Spartacus is up and walking around and expected to make a full recovery.

The dog will eventually be returned to its family. Police are investigating the attack.
