Deputies: Man steals boat from marina, heads to Cuba
MIAMI -- Cuban authorities are repatriating a man who they say stole a boat in Florida and steered it to the Caribbean island nation, reports CBS Miami.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said 38-year old Shawn Michael Luskey was detained in Havana Harbor with a white 13-foot Boston Whaler boat that was reported stolen on October 31.
Officers said they have surveillance video that showed a man wearing a full wet suit that night at the Murray Marina on Stock Island, Fla. In the video, the man pulls on several storage coolers that are locked, then walks off camera.
Moments later, the boat is seen leaving its slip but no one could be seen on board.
On November 2, a Coast Guard investigator notified deputies that Cuban border guards had detained Luskey.
Photos sent by Cuban authorities showed the boat had Florida numbers which matched the stolen boat and allegedly showed Luskey in a full wet suit like the one from the video.
Cuban authorities say they will be returning Luskey to the United States where he will face grand theft charges. His bond is set at $45,000.
