WASHINGTON (CBS) A female student at Dunbar Senior High School in the District of Columbia told police that she was raped by six assailants during school hours.

The allegations prompted authorities to arrest six youths, all under the age of 18, on November 22, reports The Washington Post.

Police said all six suspects have been charged with first-degree sexual abuse.

According to The Washington Post, the victim told police that the sexually motivated attack occurred between the pubic high school's sixth and seventh periods at or near a stairwell in the basement or on a lower level or the school.

The police report states that the six youths grabbed the female victim and kissed her around the face and neck.

Five of the attackers then proceeded to rape the victim while the sixth grabbed her from behind and placed his hand over her mouth in order to prevent her from screaming.

Authorities told The Washington Post that the incident was not reported until the student returned home from school Monday and told a parent.

She was taken to a hospital and filed a police report.

School system official Safiya J. Simmons declined to comment on the incident because it's under investigation.

The victim told police that she had reason to believe her attackers may have been affiliated with a gang, but that has not been confirmed.
