(CBS) Chord Overstreet is graduating from "Glee."

The actor, who joined the show at the beginning of last season as transfer student Sam Evans, will not be returning to the hit Fox series.

Deadline.com reports that the network has not picked up Overstreet's option to return as a series regular on the show, though he could return as an occasional guest star.

"It's been a good year. Too bad it's over," the actor tweeted on Friday. "Time for summer and starting fresh."

According to the report, Ashley Fink, who appears as recurring character Lauren Zizes, will remain a guest star and her character's presence may be scaled back.

But it's not all bad news for Gleeks - two of the show's male stars have been upgraded to series regulars. Expect to see more of Darren Criss (Blaine) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike) when the show comes back in the fall.

The news of Overstreet's departure comes after "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy's confirmation that he plans to have some of the show's main characters graduate at the end of next season.

"We didn't want to have a show where they were in high school for eight years," he explained on Ryan Seacrest's radio show last month.
