High school fight led to Texas student's murder, police say

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Carl Wilson, a Texas high school football player was ambushed and murdered on Monday and investigators believe that the shooting stemmed from a fight during lunch, reports CBS DFW.

Wilson, 18, was shot and killed Monday afternoon in the middle of the street, according to the station. Investigators told reporters that the high school student may have known his killer or killers and that they attended James Martin High School in Arlington.

Friends say that the shooting may have been a means to an end after an earlier argument at lunch.

"We believe that this is part of ongoing altercation that started today at a high school -- that all the students, young men involved -- attended," Chief Tommy Williams of the Kennedale Police Department told CBS DFW on Monday.

Police were in the process of interviewing several witnesses, but no information about possible suspects have been released, according to the CBS affiliate.

"We don't know if there are students on our campus that were specifically involved in this shooting," principal Marlene Roddy told CBS DFW. "That creates a more confusing and scary element to campus at this point."

Friends and teammates told the station that they didn't understand how this could have happened.

"Everybody loved Carl," said teammate Christian Levy. "I don't know nobody that had something bad to say about Carl. Nothing you could say."

"It's pretty sad to see, just the fact that like, we all go to the same school," said friend Darrien Murphy. "It's like one big family."

The school held a moment of silence Tuesday morning and a vigil is planned for 5:30 p.m. at the site of the shooting.
