Helicopter spots shark near surfers off Calif. beach

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- A charter aviation company posted video showing a number of sharks in the water off Northern California beaches, including a shark in the area of a couple of surfers, CBS San Francisco reports.

Specialized Helicopters, a Santa Cruz-based company that charters chopper tours in Santa Cruz and Monterey, posted a link to the video on their Facebook page Monday afternoon.

The 45-second video clip shows about 20 seconds of a large shark swimming beneath the surface of the waves before pulling back to reveal the sea predator was only a few hundred feet offshore.

The next two brief clips show a smaller shark, but one of them is visible in the water not far away from a pair of surfers waiting on their boards for waves.

In the comments on their Facebook post, Specialized Helicopters noted that sizable sharks will likely be visible in these waters on most days between now and November.

The administrator also noted that when chopper pilots spot sharks behaving aggressively in the area of surfers or swimmers, they notify the lifeguards on duty in the area of the activity.
