Calif. woman Christel Johnson kills disabled daughter, attempts suicide, say police
(CBS/KCBS) SAN LEANDRO, Calif. - Police in California say 53-year-old Christel Johnson has been arrested for allegedly murdering her disabled 8-year-old daughter in what appears to have been a botched murder-suicide.
Police rushed to a San Leandro home Friday afternoon after being contacted by a woman who was a care provider for the girl. Police said the child suffered from physical and mental disabilities.
According to CBS affiliate KCBS, the woman told officers that she found Johnson and the child inside a car in the home's garage with a running motor and a hose leading from the tail pipe to the interior.
Johnson was conscious when the care provider found her, but the girl was not, police said.
Alameda County fire officials transported the mother and child to a local hospital. Subsequently, the girl was pronounced dead by medical staff. Police say Johnson is expected to survive.
San Leandro is about 10 miles south of Oakland.
