Burglary victim may have fatally shot boy, 13, for laughing

GARY, Ind.-- Police say that there was a shooting Friday night that left a 13-year-old dead, but they are trying to figure out why it happened. They had two suspects in custody on Sunday, reports CBS Chicago.

The coroner's office says Kobe Jones was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Local police had responded to a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. that night, according to the station.

Investigators are trying to figure out whether a burglary victim became a shooting suspect. The Post Tribune reported that the burglary victim shot Jones after the teen had made fun of him after the break-in, according to law enforcement officials.

After finding his home burglarized, the suspect began knocking on doors -- demanding to know who had broken into his house, a detective told the Post Tribune. Around 5 p.m., the victim had been shot -- reportedly nine times -- and the suspect allegedly fled with his girlfriend. They later returned home and were arrested, according to the newspaper.

"We know there were a lot of people out there when he was ranting and raving, but no one wants to tell us what they saw," Cmdr. Del Stout told the Post Tribune Saturday.

According to the newspaper, the shooting suspect told police he had just been released from Kane County Jail the day he discovered the burglary.
