BoSox DL Saberhagen

Boston right-hander Bret Saberhagen was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a weak throwing shoulder.

The move was retroactive to Aug. 18, a day after the two-time Cy Young Award winner was chased after just two innings in a 12-1 loss to Oakland.

The Red Sox had hoped a week's rest would help Saberhagen, but instead they placed him on the DL for the third time this season. In May he was out with a strained shoulder and in June he was sidelined with a cut on his left foot.

Saberhagen is 9-5 with a 3.36 ERA in 18 starts.

Outfielder Damon Buford, who had been sidelined with a rib cage injury, was activated from the 15-day DL. The Red Sox optioned right-hander Brian Rose to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled right-hander Tomokazu Ohka from the Paw Sox.
