Best Bets: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Venice Film Festival
(CBS) It's shaping up to be a big week for music fans. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, James Taylor, Lenny Kravitz and the Spin Doctors all have new releases on Tuesday.
The music releases and the opening of the Venice Film Festival highlight a relatively quiet end-of-summer week in entertainment.
"I'm With You" is the Chili Pepper's first album since the two-CD "Stadium Arcadium" was released five years ago and the group's first without guitarist John Frusciante who quit the band in 2009. He has been replaced by John Klinghoffer.
Taylor is releasing a gold-CD version of his second album "Sweet Baby James," which was ranked No. 103 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time. Kravitz's ninth album "Black and White America" is described by Entertainment Weekly as "a melting pot of funk, soul, rock, and other made-in-the-USA genres."
The Spin Doctors are commemorating the 20th anniversary of their classic debut album, "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" with a two-CD set. One disc features a remastered version of the original album and the other has some live performances and previously unpublished demo tapes.
Also, the band is releasing an anniversary edition of its third album, 1970's "Stage Fright," with extra tracks and remastered versions.
On the big screen, look for the debut on the weekend of two thrillers: The sci-fi horror flick "Apollo 18" and the creepy "Shark Night 3D."
Overseas, the Venice Film Festival, which bills itself as the oldest in the world, kicks off Wednesday with George Clooney's political thriller, "The Ides of March" and continues through Sept. 10. The American Film Festival in Deauville, France, opens the following day with a screening of "The Help" and continues through Sept. 11. A tribute to actor Danny Glover is among the festivities planned.
On TV, some special programming for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will begin this week and continue through the anniversary. MSNBC is airing "Day of Destruction -- Decade of War" at 8 p.m. Thursday and Linda Ellerbee's special for kids, "What Happened? The Story of Sept. 11, 2001," airs on Nickelodeon, also at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney's memoir "In My Time," hits shelves on Tuesday, although excerpts have been published by several sources for almost a week now.
