Funky heists: Bandits steal $160,000 in Wisconsin cheese, police say

GERMANTOWN, Wisc. -- Authorities say robbers stole as much as $160,000 in cheese during a pair of heists in Germantown and Marshfield, Wisc., in the last two weeks, according to CBS affiliate WDJT.

In the most recent incident, surveillance footage allegedly shows thieves just after midnight on Friday hooking up a trailer filled with $70,000 in cheese to a semi-tractor.

Police found the trailer later that day, abandoned and without a single pressed curd left behind, according to Lt. Todd Grenier of the Germantown Police Department.

"We found that the trailer was empty" Grenier told WDJT.

In the previous incident, a week before, thieves targeted what police describe as a "logistics or storage facility," nabbing $90,000 in Parmesan cheese.

Police have not said if they have suspects in the case, but WDJT reports the cheese can no longer be sold legally. Under federal law, the moment the thieves, who are unauthorized personnel, accessed the cheese, it became unsalable.
