Babysitter Smokes Weed, Child Wanders onto Highway, Say Police

Chelsea Walkingeagle

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (CBS/AP) A teen accused of being too busy smoking marijuana to realize the 3-year-old she was babysitting had wandered onto a highway near Devils Lake, is charged with felony child abuse/neglect.

The 18-year-old Grand Forks woman, Chelsea Walkingeagle, allegedly was smoking weed in a garage April 21, when the child she was supposed to watching walked away and ended up on State Highway 20. Thankfully, a sheriff's deputy rescued the child.

Walkingeagle made a brief court appearance Monday, when District Judge Lee Christofferson set several conditions for her to remain free without posting bond, including regular drug testing. She's expected to enter a plea next month.

If convicted, the 18-year-old could face up to five years in prison.
