Arizona teen Kassandra Toruga plotted to kill her pregnant friend and steal unborn baby, say police

(CBS/KHPO/AP) MARICOPA, Ariz. - An Arizona teen is behind bars after she allegedly plotted to kill her pregnant friend and then steal the unborn baby.

Maricopa police arrested 18-year-old Kassandra Toruga Thursday after the suspect allegedly admitted she set fire to the victim's bedroom closet on February 16 because she wanted to steal her friend's child.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Toruga with two large butcher knives, a pair of scissors, diapers, and baby clothes, reports CBS affiliate KPHO.

Toruga, who police say has a documented history of schizophrenia, allegedly planned to kill her 9-months pregnant friend, perform a cesarean section on the victim, and then take the baby, passing it off as her own, reports The Arizona Republic.

Tortuga's profile picture on her MySpace page was of an ultrasound, says KPHO.

A police spokesperson told KPHO that Toruga was telling people that she was the pregnant one.

Court records show the unnamed victim has since given birth to the baby and is now fearful that Toruga will try to kidnap her child.

A spokesman for the Pinal County Attorney's Office spokesman said Toruga, who is facing attempted murder, arson and burglary charges, made her first appearance in court Friday and remains in police custody on $500,000 bond.
