(CBS News) When James Durbin returns to "American Idol" tonight, the stage will be a little different. But his mission is the same -- to put on a good show.

The season 10 finalist, who plans to perform "Higher Than Heaven," says he's looking forward to going back.

"It's going to be no different than any other week that I was on the show," Durbin told CBSNews.com. "We're really going to put on a show. We're so excited. It's going to be great. There's nothing like having that freedom of the stage and freedom of producers and freedom of putting on a show. 'You want pyro?' Yeah, sure."

The 23-year-old singer still can't get over the whirlwind year he's had.

"It's been a year," said Durbin, sounding surprised. "Wow, time flies. The stage is different. It's a completely different set-up. Walking in the doors, going through security and then going up to the studio stage is going to be like 'Whoa, this is weird.' It's going to be a lot of fun."

Durbin will be on tour this spring with Buckcherry backing his album, "Memories of a Beautiful Disaster."
