Actor Jeff Goldblum is "happy as a clam"

Jeff Goldblum is a self-proclaimed "late bloomer."

On the Fourth of July last year, the 63-year-old actor's first son, Charlie, was born while he was working on the highly anticipated movie sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence." He's also been performing with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra as a jazz pianist.

"I'm more than satisfied with all these things on my plate. I'm happy as a clam. Although I do feel more appetized, robustly appetized, and on the threshold of, to tell you the truth, my best -- maybe it's just fantasy -- my best things," Goldblum said Wednesday on "CBS This Morning."

Goldblum gushed about Charlie, calling him "fantastic."

"It's optimistic I think to have a baby at 63, that's true. But you know, I feel good," Goldblum said.

In the past 40 years, the award-winning actor has been part of more than 100 movie, television and theater productions, including roles in "Jurassic Park," "Two Gentlemen of Verona" and "Independence Day."

"When I wake up today, I feel like I could act better today, and I could play and sing better, and I do, each day when I do it. And I'm nothing if I'm not disciplined," Goldblum said. "I think, 'Geez, I'm doing this better today than I did yesterday or ever.'"

In the "Resurgence" sequel, he returns to his role as David Levinson, a scientist and computer expert who directs the Earth Space Defense program that protects the world from aliens and extraterrestrial threats.

Goldblum praised "Independence Day: Resurgence" director Roland Emmerich, calling him a "wonderful guy."

"Taught me a great, great deal," he said. "I owe him a lot."

More than 20 years after the first "Independence Day" released, the sequel opens next Friday, June 24.
